Lake Fannin Mountain Bike Trail

March 22, 2019 by Leave a Comment

Lake Fannin Mountain Bike Trail is currently unrideable and closed. As far as we can tell, there has not been a trail steward caring for the trail in several years, and as a result the trail is overgrown and in disrepair. There is a n individual considering taking the trail on as steward, and we’ll provide updates on this page whenever available.

At one time, the website Sauser Wind had this to say about the Lake Fannin trail:

“A perfect trail for beginners, the 4 miles along Lake Fannin are popular choices for those who are more interested in an easy, scenic ride than something physically challenging. However, since it is less popular than other local trails, it’s not groomed as often, which is somewhat of a deterrent to some people while others don’t mind as it gives a more “natural” look. Aside from the hiking and cycling opportunities, Lake Fannin trails are popular campsites, offering beautiful views over the lake.”

Other reports indicate there were actually about 6 miles of trail at one time, and the entire loop was considered beginner-friendly.

Blackhawk Creek Hike and Bike Trail—Whitehouse

March 22, 2019 by Leave a Comment

Not much is known about the newest Tyler-area trail in Whitehouse, TX beyond the name and location. Blackhawk Creek Hike and Bike Trail is located at the dead end of Patrick Rd in Whitehouse. Here are some basic directions.

COMING FROM THE NORTH:

  • Drive south on Highway 110 through the Main St./346 intersection.
  • Turn left onto Hagan Dr (at the Dollar General).
  • Turn right onto Corey Dr. (some maps call the road Carey Dr.).
  • Turn left onto Patrick Rd.
  • Drive to the dead end.

From information shared on the Simpson’s Fitness & Adventure Sports Facebook page, the trail appears to be about 3 miles in length. Difficult, climbing, and TTFs are currently unknown. We will update this page as more information becomes available.

Whitehouse is currently looking for a volunteer trail steward.

Circle Trail—Wichita Falls

March 4, 2019 by Leave a Comment

The Circle Trail in Wichita Falls is almost a complete circuit of of central Wichita Falls. It features over 18 miles of concrete trail with multiple access points around the city.

One of the best places to access the trail is at Lucy Park, which has multiple access points and also grants direct access to the Wee-Chi-Tah mountain bike trail.

Three proposed connector trails have been funded that will complete the circle around town for a total of approximately 24 miles. Construction of these connectors was slated to begin in 2018.

Almost all of the trails consist of 10 foot wide reinforced concrete. Walkers, joggers, cyclists, and skating are allowed along the trail. No motorized vehicles.

Maps are available of the entire trail as well as various segments:

The Northeast Texas Trail—The NETT

March 4, 2019 by Leave a Comment

More suited for lovers of gravel grinding and backpacking than mountain bikers.

Once completed The Northeast Texas Trail will be the 4th longest hike, bike, and equestrian trail in the United States. The NETT is a product of the growing rails-to-trails movement, and was first conceived in the late 1990’s when the Union Pacific and Chaparral railroads ceased active service and publicized their railroad corridors as available for rail banking through the Surface Transportation Board. In response, the Rails to Trails Conservancy, The Greater Paris Development Foundation, and Chaparral to Trails Inc applied for and became trail bank entities.

Over the years, several cities and towns along the trail took over responsibilities for the trail, and other cities were granted trail bank status on other segments of abandoned railway. In 2012, the Northeast Texas Trail Coalition formally became operational as a 501c(3) and was granted operational oversight for the NETT.

The main, southwestern trailhead is located in Farmersville. The Audie Murphy Trailhead is found at the corner of Hill and Main streets. Another, larger parking area is found at the J.W. Spain Sports Complex at 205 Murchison St in Farmersville. Day parking for trailers can be obtained at the sports complex. For a list of other trailheads and parking areas along the NETT, please see this page on the NETT website.

Lodging, food, and campsites are available along the way for those who would like to travel long segments. You should plan out your trip ahead of time.

See below for an interactive map of the NETT detailing trailheads, food, lodging, camping, parking, points of interest, and more.

The full trail runs from Farmersville all the way to New Boston. Not all sections of the trail are complete, and some sections may be under construction or repair at various times. A few segments of the trail are impassible or highly difficult to traverse when wet. It is highly-recommended you inquire on the NETT Facebook page about current conditions along the trail. Various bypasses exist along the trail. Check out the interactive map below for more details.
